Landmarks Commission flags documentation discrepancies, sends three properties to Common Council

The New Berlin Landmarks Commission on Nov. 20 reviewed discrepancies in its landmark documentation identified by Waukesha County and the City Clerk’s Office and said corrective steps are underway.

Chairperson Orzel noted a list of discrepancies, which Candace White of Waukesha County and Megan Godshall, New Berlin City Clerk, helped verify. White told the Commission that corresponding affidavits are expected to be scanned by the end of January; the City Clerk’s Office is also working to correct records.

The Commission identified three properties that must be approved through the Common Council at its Dec. 9, 2025 meeting: Lindsey-Murphy-Heinz-Sisson Farm, Luthi Family Barn, and Cutler-Kern-Kimball Farmstead. No vote on those approvals occurred at the Nov. 20 meeting; the items will go to the Common Council for formal action.

Commissioner Tyskiewicz reviewed documents transferred from former Chair Laurie DeMoss, including a list of New Berlin houses built between 1800 and 1901 for potential landmark consideration. Vice-Chairperson Ament said she will deliver 'Preserve America' application forms and documentation to the Mayor’s Office. Commissioner Warczak also circulated details for the Commission’s participation in New Berlin’s USA 250th Anniversary 'Red, White & Scoops' event April 26, 2026, and the group discussed retractable banner displays and brochure updates tied to completed affidavit scans.

The Commission updated its annual goals to include preparing and maintaining sign/QR installations, updating the list of historic districts and landmarks, completing documentation guidelines for new landmarks, and continuing community education and historical-day participation. A proposal to reduce Commission membership was tabled until Alderman Harenda returns. The Commission scheduled its next meeting for Jan. 15, 2026.
