Prosper Fire Rescue and bystanders honored after on-scene lifesaving response

Prosper Fire Rescue and several bystanders were recognized by the Town Council on March 24 for their roles in saving a resident who suffered cardiac arrest in January.
The Fire Chief described a Jan. 12 incident in which bystanders Jamie Fitzgerald, Will Austin and Chad Simmons began CPR and helped until Prosper Fire Rescue arrived. He said responders used an AED and advanced life-support interventions (multiple defibrillations, intubation, a Lucas mechanical chest-compression device and medications) during transport to Baylor PGA and that the patient regained spontaneous circulation before transfer. The chief said, "If you give us a viable chance, we're gonna get them back," and credited teamwork across dispatch, bystanders, crews and the receiving hospital.
Patient Patrick Roberts told the council he was "living proof" of the value of CPR and thanked those who assisted. "Survival rate is about 10 percent," he said, adding that the quick action of bystanders and trained responders made the difference for his family. Certificates of recognition were presented to the named bystanders and to fire personnel and dispatchers.
Council members and staff acknowledged the department's training and the importance of community CPR training; the recognition highlighted both professional emergency response and the critical role of immediate bystander aid in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
