Chelsea — Three candidates running in the May 19 primary addressed the Chelsea City Council April 21, using the meeting to describe their priorities and seek local votes.
Jacob Tidmore, who described himself as the current Shelby County property tax commissioner and a longtime county employee, emphasized transparency in the tax office and improvements his team has made to notices and a public 'transparency' tab on the office website. “I humbly ask for y'all's vote on May 19,” Tidmore said, noting nine years in the office and his appointment after the death of the previous commissioner.
Jay Welborn, running for the newly created Shelby County District Court place 3, framed the seat as the county’s high-volume, front-line court and said voters need a judge with broad experience who can begin work immediately. Welborn recounted experience in district and circuit courts and asked for support for his candidacy.
Scott Ortiz, a pharmacist and businessman running for State Senate District 15, described an agenda emphasizing tax relief—including eliminating sales tax on groceries—support for first responders and proposals for term limits. Ortiz said his background in health care and business made him attuned to constituent concerns about taxes and affordability.
Council President and others encouraged residents to vote in the May 19 primary. The candidates’ appearances were part of the meeting’s community forum and did not involve council endorsement or action.
