Town engineer: Marler/Vaughn intersection will add turn lanes; roundabout updates pending

At the Feb. 25 meeting, Town Engineer Brad Flowers updated the council on several transportation projects.
Flowers said Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) plans for the Marler/Vaughn intersection include a left-turn lane from Vaughn to Marler and a right-turn lane with an acceleration lane from Marler to Vaughn. He told the council a property owner donated the land needed for the turn lane and that the acceleration lane would extend roughly the full length of the donated property, which Flowers estimated at about 600 feet. With the donated right-of-way, the project can proceed to bid letting, likely in early summer.
When Councilman Rob Steindorff asked about the timeline for the Highway 80 roundabouts, Flowers said he had not received an updated completion date beyond the earlier estimate of late March or early April. Councilman Marcus Robinson asked about the Wallahatchie roundabout; Flowers said two remaining itemsreflective striping and signagewere on order and should be installed soon.
Separately, Councilwoman Angie Bradsher reported on discussions with Volunteer Fire Departments about revenue percentages and collection. The council agreed to request clarification from the Revenue Commissioner's office about including property location in revenue allocation and to revisit whether future agreements should be 10-year terms or shorter.
