Council issues proclamations for National Fitness Month, honors Commander Everett Alvarez and proclaims Education Appreciation Week

Later the council formally honored Navy Commander Everett Alvarez Jr. following his award of the Congressional Gold Medal. The council noted Alvarez’s long public service and his years in captivity during the Vietnam War; Bill Gray of the Veterans Commission and county representatives praised Alvarez’s decades of veteran advocacy. Commander Alvarez thanked the council and reflected on living in Montgomery County: “My wife and I have found this our community to be a great place. It’s a great place to raise our children,” he said.
The council also proclaimed Education Appreciation Week. Vice President Jiwando, chair of the Education and Culture Committee, read the proclamation and invited educators and education leaders to speak. Montgomery College President Dr. Jermaine Williams, an assistant principal chosen as Maryland assistant principal of the year, teachers and the Montgomery County Education Association president offered brief remarks emphasizing counseling, teacher support and the county’s role in sustaining school staffing and outreach.
