Zion ESD 6 board approves enrollment realignment for 2026–27 school year

Superintendent Julious Lawson presented the 'Right Size, Right Support, Every Student' proposal, citing observations of enrollment, class sizes and behavior considerations and offering recommended schedules and implementation timelines. Under the approved plan, Elmwood and West will serve all 3rd- and 4th-grade students; Shiloh Intermediate will serve all 5th- and 6th-grade students; Zion Central Middle will serve all 7th- and 8th-grade students; and Lakeview will house Pre-K while continuing to serve kindergarten through 2nd grade.
The motion to implement the recommended changes was made by Board Member Jazmine Crump and seconded by Jacqueline San Diego. The roll-call vote recorded Ayes from Crump, San Diego, Robert Surano, Ken Fielding, Denise Lear and President Margie Taylor; there were no Nays. The board carried the motion.
Board leaders said the realignment was presented with supporting observations, a staff feedback survey and recommended timelines; the presentation materials discussed anticipated benefits for class-size balancing and targeted supports. The board did not record a formal amendment to the plan at the March 16 meeting and set no new effective-date changes beyond the stated start in the 2026–27 school year.
Next steps noted by district staff include finalizing school schedules and communicating placement details to families and staff prior to the start of the 2026–27 year.
