Piedmont council approves $858,233.97 in bills, appoints housing board member and OKs three unsafe-structure removals

The Piedmont City Council approved payment of $858,233.97 in bills and took several housekeeping actions during its March 3, 2026 meeting.
Mayor Farmer presided over the session. Greg South moved and Brittney Williams seconded approval of the bills totaling $858,233.97; the council voted unanimously to pay them as presented.
The council appointed Mac Singleton to the Piedmont Housing Authority Board of Commissioners for a five-year term ending March 31, 2031. Carlos Farmer made the motion to appoint Singleton; Kevin McCord seconded, and the motion carried with all members voting aye.
The council considered Resolution 2026-01, an amendment to the certificate of incorporation of the Piedmont Health Care Authority that would state directors are not subject to statutory residency requirements under the 1982 Health Care Authorities Act. Frank Cobb moved to table Resolution 2026-01; Carlos Farmer seconded and the motion to table was approved.
Council members approved three separate resolutions authorizing the city to remove unsafe houses and other structures and to place liens on the properties:
• Resolution 2026-02: authorization to remove structures at 203 Old Ladiga Road, Piedmont, AL 36272 (motion by Greg South; second by Frank Cobb; approved unanimously).
• Resolution 2026-03: authorization to remove structures at 307 S. Harris Avenue, Piedmont, AL 36272 (motion by Frank Cobb; second by Carlos Farmer; approved unanimously).
• Resolution 2026-04: authorization to remove structures at 6656 Old Piedmont Gadsden Highway, Piedmont, AL 36272 (motion by Mark Epps; second by Carlos Farmer; approved unanimously).
During the public comment period, visitor John Givens spoke about problems with the air-conditioning units at the Fire/Court building and outlined what he said needed replacing. Kevin Farmer asked Givens to provide the fire chief with a written quote for the work.
In council reports, Council member Brittney Williams explained why the Peppertown committee could no longer meet at the Bethune Center, and Council member Frank Cobb requested that the ditch on Sanford be cleaned. The mayor said the Park and Recreation job posting closes Wednesday and interviews will begin thereafter.
With no further business, Carlos Farmer moved to adjourn; Frank Cobb seconded and the council voted to adjourn.
