Dalton City Council voted Monday to authorize an intergovernmental rental agreement enabling the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to continue leasing 2,253 square feet of the Dalton Freight Depot for the Bandy Heritage Center.
City staff said the museum and its exhibits have operated in the freight depot under a lease since 2015 and that the prior lease term expired. Under the new agreement, the tenant will pay $1,000 per month in rent, the initial term runs through June 30, 2026, and the contract includes four consecutive one-year renewal options to keep the arrangement under the statutory limits for short-term leases.
Staff told the council the city will remain responsible for water and wastewater billing for the premises while the Board of Regents will continue to pay for electricity; the city will be responsible for facility maintenance except for routine noncapital items such as changing light bulbs and filters. Management recommended adoption and the council approved the agreement by voice vote.
What happens next: staff will finalize the rental documents and the city attorney will prepare the agreement for the mayor's signature.
