Dalton council approves traffic-control changes and several small contracts

Dalton City Council on Monday approved a set of traffic-control changes and small professional-service contracts the city says will improve safety and municipal operations.
Council members voted to implement a no-parking zone on Reinhardt Drive from Citadel to Davidson from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. after staff said fire and sanitation vehicles were impeded by double parking. Public works staff said temporary parking would be allowed for deliveries and home-maintenance vehicles and that the city would install compliant signage.
The council also approved a 'no right turn on red' restriction for westbound traffic turning onto South Frederick Street from East Morris Street after staff reported inadequate sight distances at that intersection, and approved converting the one-way approach on Fort Hill Circle to a two-way configuration to improve side distances and allow direct access to several residences without routing through an adjacent school parking lot. Staff said any work will comply with AASHTO and Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards.
Separately, the council approved a $14,400 contract with Geo Hydro Engineers for geotechnical engineering, construction material testing and special inspection services for the Temple Beth El Memorial Park project. Staff said the services include foundation bearing evaluations, concrete and grout strength testing, steel reinforcement inspections and soil-density assessments and will be charged to project account BD162.
All items were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote; no roll-call tallies were read into the record.
What happens next: staff will implement signage and coordinate the engineering and inspection work; specific implementation timelines were not specified at the meeting.
