Parents and teachers ask about library staffing and iReady data; district says data is safe

Several public commenters asked the board to address library staffing levels and data-security concerns tied to widely reported litigation involving Curriculum Associates and iReady.

Heather Whitcraft told the board she was concerned about the effect on students if data had been collected or shared improperly and asked whether the district had a plan to protect students and whether parents could refuse use of the program. "What is our district doing to prepare for the fallout from the lawsuit against Curriculum Associates and iReady?" she asked.

Another commenter said the district has only three certificated media specialists and warned that without specialists students may not receive consistent instruction in research and media literacy. "When we limit access to reading and information, we limit opportunity," said a public speaker, urging the board to ensure all grade levels have access to libraries and trained staff.

The superintendent said the district will send a comprehensive email on Friday addressing iReady and that, to the district’s knowledge, student data are safe. He urged caution in public statements pending completion of the district’s review and directed staff to provide details to parents and teachers.

Board members said they would check whether previously budgeted funds for books were received and report back. No formal action on iReady or library staffing occurred at the meeting; the topics were added to the list of follow-up items for administration.
