Fayette council approves alcohol license, parade permit, hires and fleet work

At its regular meeting the Fayette City Council approved several routine but substantive items: adoption of Resolution 2026-03 to grant an alcohol license to Mid South Petroleum Corp. for retail beer (off-premises) and retail table wine (off-premises); approval of a parade permit for "March for Jesus" on May 16, 2026; hiring approvals for two police recruits and a firefighter; and awards of local contracts for building cleaning and a fuel-system installation.

Mayor Rod Northam opened and the council approved Resolution 2026-03 on a voice vote. The council had earlier opened a public hearing on an alcohol license application for Max Mini Mart and staff explained the packet language limiting the license to off-premises beer and table wine. Council members asked location and operational questions during the public hearing before closing it to consider the resolution.

Personnel decisions included council consent to hire Timothy Chase Keaton and Carson Terry Lawrence as police officers to attend the police academy, and approval to hire Avery Hancock as a firefighter; those approvals were presented as consent items and passed by voice vote. The council also approved step increases effective on the next paycheck for John Stewart and David Pauline after each completed one year of service.

On procurement, the council voted to proceed with a full cleaning of Old City Hall using ServPro based on a lower quote, and accepted the low bid from Foster Brothers to install a fuel system in a recently purchased truck (Foster Brothers $10,368.94 vs. West Alabama Ford $10,586.68), noting the additional cost exceeded the original truck budget by about $3,385 but that maintenance budgets remain under budget for the year.

The council set a public hearing for the 2027 transportation budget on May 12, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. and then moved into executive session to discuss a legal matter.
