Police and Fire Commission ratifies end of probation for three firefighters

The Police and Fire Commission voted 5-0 on Jan. 20, 2026, in New Berlin to ratify Fire Chief Mark Polzin’s recommendations to end the probationary periods of three Fire Department employees and grant them permanent status effective immediately.
The action followed a closed session convened at 1:06 PM under Wisconsin Statute § 19.85(1)(c) to consider employment and personnel matters. The commission returned to open session at 1:33 PM and then considered Chief Polzin’s personnel recommendations.
Commissioner Lanser moved to ratify the chief’s recommendations to end the probationary periods for Cesar Cervantes, Matt Conrad and Israel Santa Maria; Commissioner Palechek seconded. The motion carried unanimously, 5-0. The minutes record the change of status as effective immediately. Commissioners took no further action on a separate personnel-updates item.
The meeting was held at the Public Safety Building, 16300 W. National Avenue. The commission adjourned at 1:35 PM.
