The New Berlin Safety Commission voted unanimously on Jan. 14 to recommend that the Common Council approve two “No Parking” signs and a painted taper line on the west side of 124th Street between the south side of the driveway for 4387 S. 124th Street and the north side of the Varsity Club to address visibility hazards.
Resident Juli Baxter, 13765 W. Linfield Drive, told the commission that when cars park on the west side of 124th Street “it created visibility issues for drivers traveling southbound, especially when vehicles were exiting the Varsity Club parking lot.” Engineering representative Tammy Simonson presented a map of the area and said the signs could be justified by the shifting taper at that location; DPW Director Lucas Pichler agreed that adding No Parking signage was appropriate.
Alderwoman Charlotte Kroupa asked whether any time-limited parking could be used; Simonson replied that because the change would address taper-related safety concerns, signs would restrict parking at all times. Commissioner Mary English noted that southbound drivers who do not plan to turn left may be forced to merge right, increasing risk if vehicles are parked on the west side.
DPW Director Lucas Pichler moved the recommendation; Alderwoman Charlotte Kroupa seconded. The motion to recommend the Common Council approve two No Parking signs on the west side of 124th Street between the driveway for 4387 S. 124th Street and the north side of the Varsity Club, and to add a painted taper line to be installed by the Streets Department, passed 9-0.
The recommendation will be forwarded to the Common Council for final action.
