Summary
Trustees approved Draft A of the 2027–28 instructional calendar and a modification to the current 2026–27 calendar to replace semester half days with full student days followed by teacher prep days; district committees overwhelmingly favored the change.
The Brazosport ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve the administration’s recommended 2027–28 instructional calendar (Draft A) and to modify the 2026–27 adopted calendar by eliminating semester half days.
Administration told trustees the calendar committee, district improvement committee and campus improvement committees favored Draft A, with the committee vote reported at 100% and other groups showing strong support. The recommended change would convert designated half days at the end of each semester into a full student day followed by a teacher preparation day, leaving total instructional minutes unchanged.
Supporters at the meeting said removing half days simplifies schedules for families and staff. One parent asked whether the district would again use a broader poll for calendar preferences; administration answered that committees include parent representation and that polling practices would be discussed.
A motion to approve the recommended calendar and modifications was made, seconded and carried by voice vote. Administration said the change keeps semesters balanced (about 80 student days in fall and 86 in spring for the proposed calendar) and preserves total instructional minutes required by state law.
Board discussion noted the calendar committee’s aims to start staff no earlier than August 1 and students no earlier than the week of Aug. 11 and to place holidays on Fridays when feasible. The board directed administration to continue clear communication with families about schedule changes and to consider transition events for students affected by campus reconfigurations.
