Commission approves routine agenda items, donations and contracts; public raises local concerns

The Carter County Board of Commissioners completed several routine and committee actions on Dec. 19 while receiving public comment on local concerns.
Commissioners approved the meeting agenda and accepted the Nov. 21, 2022 minutes. They approved a list of notaries and bonds, monetary donations of $5,365 and non-monetary donations of $1,796.22 to the Carter County Animal Shelter, and a five-year copier contract with Novatech for the Sheriff's Office.
The Rules and Bylaws Committee's proposed 2023 schedule for monthly committee meetings was approved. The County Attorney, Joshua Hardin, reported he had received notification from the U.S. Board on Geographic Names that the name 'Squawberry' would be changed on federal maps despite a county resolution opposing or noting the local resolution.
During public comments residents raised a complaint about a dump site (Mary Neese of Toll Branch Road) and urged scrutiny of tax spending (Roy Livingston). Charles Von Cannon requested a tribute to volunteer John Bland be read by Chair Holdren.
