Nomination for 2nd District constable fails after tied votes

The commission considered the nomination of Samuel Pearce to fill the 2nd District constable vacancy at its Jan. 17 meeting. Vice Chairman Donnie Cable presented Pearce as the lone applicant. After procedural motions failed to defer the matter, Commissioner Daniel McInturff formally nominated Pearce.
The electronic vote on the nomination resulted in nine yes votes, nine no votes and one abstention (Gary Kemp), producing no majority and leaving the vacancy unfilled. Earlier motions to defer the nomination to the next month also failed on recorded votes.
Commissioners expressed differing views during the discussion; the tied vote means the commission will need to revisit the vacancy in a future meeting if it wishes to fill the seat.
