Flat Lander sculpture found damaged; commission plans inspection and repair

A speaker at the Jan. 22 meeting reported that the Flat Lander sculpture had been found on the sidewalk last week and that staff believe the damage was caused by water entering a hollow, freezing and causing seams to burst.
"So we don't know exactly what caused it, but, I believe it was Friday of last week, we got a call saying, hey, Flat Lander's on the sidewalk," the speaker said, describing how staff then retrieved the piece and moved it to storage for safekeeping.
She said staff observed water inside a hollow area and that "a chunk of ice fell out"; "it froze and then busted the seams... So it was 2 welds that were basically busted." She added that Phil Proctor will come next week to check the sculpture and assess whether it can be repaired.
The speaker also said police reviewed security cameras and "didn't see anything," indicating no clear evidence of intentional vandalism on camera. The speaker noted that a sign had also fallen nearby and that staff will investigate whether the falling sign and the sculpture's collapse are related.
The commission did not vote on repairs at the meeting; staff will report back after the inspection by Phil Proctor.
