Board approves East Heights change orders, green‑lights emergency waiver after water‑main break

The Henderson County Board of Education on April 20 approved two change orders for the East Heights Elementary renovation and authorized the superintendent to request an emergency day waiver from the Kentucky Department of Education following a March 20 water‑main break.

District staff presented Change Order No. 10 for $4,858.92 and Change Order No. 14‑4 for $8,305, which the superintendent said were needed to relocate electrical lines between pods and address signage work on the East Heights project. "I'd recommend a motion to approve change order number 10 in the amount of $4,858.92 and change order number 14‑4 in the amount of $8,305 for the East Heights Elementary renovation project as presented," Superintendent Dr. Lawson said. The board moved, seconded and approved the recommendation by voice vote.

Separately, staff asked the board to send a formal request to the Kentucky Department of Education for a school emergency day waiver for East Heights after construction staff hit a water main and the school had an early release on March 20. Principal described the event and noted that an emergency waiver would prevent East Heights from having to make up missed instructional time. Superintendent Lawson recommended sending the waiver request; the board approved the motion to seek the waiver.

Colton Miller, the district construction representative, also reported progress on South Middle (ceiling grid and MEP work completed over spring break) and said geothermal drilling on the high‑school football field is complete with landscaping to follow.

The board took no further public action on construction funding at the meeting beyond approving the two change orders and authorizing the waiver request.
