At its April meeting the Newman City Council handled a slate of routine but consequential items, voting unanimously on appointments, liquor licenses and several resolutions and requests.
Appointments and confirmations: The council made multiple appointments including a nomination of Jordan Reed to the Convention Center Authority and reappointments to the Development Authority and Youth Activities Commission; Shannon Pearson was nominated to the comprehensive plan steering committee representing the African American Alliance. All motions carried unanimously.
Alcohol licenses: Council consolidated public hearings on several alcohol-beverage license applications (Newnan Chevron; Jackson Food Mart at 223 Jackson St.; Let's Talk Brunch LLC at 226 Greenville St., Suite H; Par 4 Golf Company at 27 Madison St.; and Sip Happens Boutique and Wine Bar). No members of the public spoke in opposition; council approved all consolidated items unanimously.
Arboretum partnership and grant: Council accepted a memorandum of understanding with the Southern Conservation Trust (no financial commitment) to strengthen a state Outdoor Stewardship Program grant application for a proposed arboretum on city-owned property at Boone Road and 4th Street. Chris Stone, president and CEO of the Southern Conservation Trust, introduced the organization and said it could serve as a long-term partner in stewardship and concept planning.
Residential master file program: Building/plans staff described a program to create master plan files for production-builder plans to reduce repetitive review time. Using a 300-lot example, staff said master files could cut review time by roughly 152–211 hours; council adopted the program unanimously.
Events and closures: Council approved First Baptist Church’s May 11 Brown Street closure for a youth event for 3PM–9PM (denied the 7AM–9PM proposal), approved Bridging the Gap’s summer lunch program at CJ Smith Park (May 26–July 31, weekdays), continued a First Baptist request for a family-friendly Porchfest area to allow coordination with Porchfest organizers and a plan for off-duty police staffing, and denied a sidewalk/parking request from Tony Caro for a May 9 anniversary event due to the applicant’s absence.
