Representative Lowe told the committee that local law enforcement in Florence asked for legislation to address unsafe fishing and parking on a narrow causeway that carries about 11,000 cars per day. He said vehicles were parking on the narrow shoulder, children ran across the pavement, and there had been deaths.
"We get a lot of fishing from the bridge and people were parking their cars and fishing... kids were doing what kids do, running across the street and... endangering themselves," Representative Lowe said. He said the county will post no-parking signs and handle citations and that the measure is intended to save lives; he mentioned typical fines of about $25.
The committee moved and approved the measure by roll call; the chair announced the bill passed the committee 14-0. The bill will advance to the next stage for additional consideration.
