Weston staff briefed on nonrenewals as district projects one fewer first‑grade section
Summary
Julie told the board the district must notify teachers of nonrenewal by May 1; five long‑term substitutes and two permanent staff are recommended for nonrenewal for 2026–27 due to a reduction in sections and shifting FTE needs. Finance reported FY27 requests were reduced by roughly $519,000.

Julie, introducing the staffing update at the April 20 Weston Board of Education meeting, said state law requires the district to provide notice of teacher contract nonrenewals prior to May 1 and that those nonrenewals must be approved by the board.
"By way of explanation, by state statute, we are required to provide notice of nonrenewal of contracts to teachers prior to May 1 of each year," Julie said as she outlined recommendations. The staffing list presented to the board recommends that five staff members in long‑term substitute roles not be renewed for the 2026–27 school year (an operational practice for temporary positions) and that two permanent contracted staff be recommended for nonrenewal because of reductions in force: the district is projecting one fewer first‑grade section and less FTE need for Latin instruction.
Julie emphasized that the recommended nonrenewals tied to reductions in force "are not in any way a reflection of their performance" but rather reflect projected position availability.
Separately, Phil reported the district is on track to end the year balanced. He said the board of finance approved a FY27 reduction of approximately $519,000 on the operating side (about 0.87%), producing a new operating request of roughly $1,800,000 (a 3.07% increase compared with current levels). The capital request was reduced by $320,000. Phil noted the next step in the budget calendar: ATBM this Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. at the high school auditorium.
What happens next: the staffing nonrenewal recommendations are on the record and will proceed according to the district’s statutory notice process; committee and HR staff will continue to refine position planning and communicate with affected employees as required.
