A board member called out inconsistent language in the nondiscrimination complaint procedure (regulation R1258) and requested more time to iron out who parents should contact and other procedural clarifications. The board agreed to "pull the policy and the regulation" and hold them until the May 4 committee meeting, the chair said. Erica said the committee will make edits and bring the items back for a subsequent read.
Members also asked clarifying questions about specific policies: how parents would request to inspect district or third‑party surveys, whether statutory explanatory notes (for example, awarding diplomas to veterans) should live in policy or legal references, and how student publications are defined and overseen. Erica said statutory language will be referenced under legal citations rather than embedded in policy text and that the publications and survey items will be refined in committee before the board acts again.
The board approved the presented package of policies (with the exception of the held nondiscrimination regulation) by voice vote. The chair thanked the policy committee and staff for the extensive review and said the committee remains open to suggested edits.
What happens next: items pulled for revision (notably the nondiscrimination regulation R1258 and the student‑publication definition) will return to the policy committee in early May for edits and a subsequent board read. The board will consider the cleaned‑up language at its May 4 meeting and at a later second read where required.
