Six candidates for appointment to the Rochester Ethical Practices Board spoke at a public hearing on April 20, describing professional and community backgrounds relevant to adjudication, advisory and oversight roles.
Attorney Michael Spindler Craig opened the hearing and explained the public process and the role of the appointing committee, which will meet April 30 to finalize appointments.
Linda Paulzer described a career in social work and experience as a living-donor advocate, saying ethical codes guide her practice and that she hopes to "contribute to our community and to the field of ethics." Travis Wilson, who identified himself as a Rochester resident and candidate, said he sees the board as fulfilling adjudicative, advisory and compliance oversight functions and cited experience reviewing allegations and ensuring process integrity.
Chris Brandt and Ndidi Nwaneri also presented. Brandt spoke about long-term Rochester residency, volunteer work and committee experience; Nwaneri highlighted academic research in ethics and public policy and emphasized that institutions must be perceived as ethical as well as be ethical. Kathleen Hansen also spoke, raising issues about multigenerational housing (later relevant to a separate agenda item) and inspection-notification practices.
Mayor Norton and council members thanked applicants and noted the city has multiple board and commission vacancies and encouraged applicants who are not selected to consider other opportunities. The appointing committee will receive the public hearing record and is scheduled to meet April 30 to select two appointees.
