Berkeley honors local leaders and remembers Malcolm Margolin and Anne Fagan Ginger

Antonio "Tony" Mejia, manager of Juan’s Place (914 Carlton St.), was honored for decades of community service, food donations and support for Berkeley parents; Mejia thanked the council and reflected on community compassion and feeding neighbors.
The council also recognized Steve Moroz for more than 25 years managing the Bancroft Community Garden, praising volunteer coordination, garden programming and recovery work after vandalism; Moroz said the garden creates food security and a mental-health space and noted plans to expand garden programming and community-owned space.
Members read a proclamation honoring Malcolm Margolin’s work as a writer, publisher and community leader; his family thanked the council and noted upcoming commemorative events. The council also read an adjournment in memory of Anne Fagan Ginger, outlining her legal work, founding of the Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute, teaching, mentorship and human-rights advocacy; several former students and colleagues offered personal tributes.
The mayor and council acknowledged the tributes; several speakers encouraged continuing Ginger’s human-rights work, including updating prior treaty-compliance reports previously sent to the United Nations.
The ceremonial items did not include formal policy votes and were presented as acknowledgments and memorials.
