Gonzales principal credits coherent SIP systems for winter gains in reading and math

Stephanie Steinrescher, principal of Jaybird Gonzales Child Center, presented her school's school improvement plan to the Aurora East USD 131 curriculum board and described changes in instruction and measurable interim gains.
Steinrescher said the school set a 6% growth target for literacy and had "hit that target" by winter after focusing on consistent small-group instruction, routine monitoring and teacher collaboration. On math, she reported growth in benchmark achievement from 15% to 35% of students meeting the benchmark by winter, crediting sustained small-group instruction and progress monitoring.
She described the SIP process as more than a document, saying the team used SMART goals reviewed in regular PLCs and multiple rounds of classroom observations that included both certified and classified staff. "People were willing to open their classrooms, learn from each other, and make adjustments," Steinrescher said.
On school culture and attendance, Steinrescher reported an attendance rate of 91.9% with chronic absenteeism at about 30%, and she said the school has increased family communication and virtual events to boost engagement. She emphasized that the school's work centers on improving consistency of routines and instruction across classrooms to translate practice into outcomes.
Steinrescher closed by saying the building is in a stronger place than a year ago and that staff will continue monitoring short cycles of progress to sustain improvements.
