Committee reviews referendum budget reconciliation; some bids over estimate, some savings found

Assistant Superintendent of Operations Miss Channel presented a detailed referendum budget update to the Wausau School District committee of the whole on March 23.
Channel summarized reconciliations and bid results: the district’s previously listed $3,000,000 line for districtwide iPads has been adjusted and shows about $2,000,000 spent so far; Wausau East’s reconciliation reduced its projected cost by approximately $480,000 compared with the prior estimate; bids for Franklin Elementary and Rib Mountain that opened March 12 came in about 9% above earlier budget figures but remain within the threshold the board authorized for proceeding with bids. Channel said John Marshall bids opened March 5 came in lower than expected, producing cost savings.
Channel said staff found some accounting errors during reconciliation and have sought recoveries: Nexus was contacted about duplicate payments and the district expects refunds of roughly $13,000 for the school forest and about $24,000 for Satina Elementary. She reported Wausau West is showing an increase of about $215,000 as part of continuing reconciliation but overall the project is still listed as under budget at about $1.9 million pending outstanding bills. Channel said the district will continue to reconcile bills as projects move forward and will keep the board updated when figures solidify.
A board member asked whether fencing bids could be included in the referendum work; Channel said she would add that item to the priority list for staff review. Channel emphasized staff are working with Nexus and the business department to ensure bills are reconciled and bid budgets are included in updates to the board.
