Summary
The board meeting featured student chamber music performances and a staff presentation on the role of arts instruction in developing student skills and voice; two Syosset students were selected to perform with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center next month.
Superintendent Dr. Rogers introduced a programmatic presentation on the arts and how instruction emphasizes process and authenticity — skills the district said are increasingly important in an era of AI and automation.
Dr. Hill (arts presenter) described Syosset’s small‑group lessons and chamber music ensembles, which begin in third grade and provide concentrated instruction through master teachers. He highlighted strong participation at NYSSMA solo and ensemble festivals and noted the district’s chamber music club is student‑led at the high school level.
Teachers introduced student performers across elementary, middle and high school levels. Amy Kausner introduced two third‑grade duet performers, Angelina and Emily, who received an outstanding rating at NYSSMA. Band director Mandy Boonshaft introduced middle‑school duet performers John Min and Timothy Manjiruga, who earned a perfect score at NYSSMA. High‑school teacher Stephanie Martin described the Chamber Music Club (about 40 students) and introduced seniors Aidan Chan Tempsen and Daniel Meng, who spoke about collaboration and growth gained through chamber music.
Orchestra teacher Jeannie Chung introduced seventh‑grade students Milo Gu and Matthew Gu, who were selected to perform at Alice Tully Hall as part of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s young artist programs next month. Milo credited teachers and principals for supporting his development.
The presenters and students tied the performances to the district’s Portrait of a Graduate, noting how ensemble work builds collaboration, critical thinking and ownership of learning. The board thanked teachers and student performers.
