Grant County P&Z unanimously approves four building permits and recommends WRT fiber utility permit

The Grant County Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously approved four building permits and recommended that the county commissioners approve a utility permit for WRT’s planned fiber installation during its March 12, 2026 meeting.
Chairman Robert Ternes opened the meeting at 10:00 a.m. MDT and the commission approved the agenda and the February minutes. P&Z Director Jason Albert updated members that the county commissioners had approved the variance requested by Corey Roth and briefed the commission on the status of WRT’s outstanding utility permit.
The commission debated whether structures labeled “farm use only” should require county building permits and associated fees under the county ordinance. After discussing the question, the commission directed Director Jason Albert to consult the State’s Attorney for an interpretation of the current ordinance language before proposing any permitting changes.
The commission then considered four building permits and approved each by voice vote. Permit BLD-2026-05, an application by Troy Miller for a new shop, was approved on a motion by Matt Hager and a second from Barb Kraft. Permit BLD-2026-006, submitted by Randy Mildenberger for a 20-by-24-foot shop lean-to and a 4-by-12-foot deck overhang, was approved after a motion by Brenden Becher and a second by Matt Hager. Permit 2025-007, a structural modification to an existing building filed by Jacob Edinger, passed on a motion from Bob Larson seconded by Vernon Straub. Permit BLD-2026-008, for Noah and Robyn Gillen to construct a cover for an existing deck, was approved following a motion by Barb Kraft and a second by Vernon Straub. The minutes record that all permit motions carried with all members in favor.
On the utility permit, the commission voted to approve Utility Permit UTL-2026-002 for WRT to bore and run fiber-optic cable to the Rafteseth residence and to forward a recommendation of approval to the county commissioners; the motion to recommend approval was made by Vernon Straub and seconded by Brenden Becher and carried unanimously.
The commission set its next regular meeting for April 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. MDT and adjourned at 10:37 a.m.
