WJCC to launch Army JROTC unit at Jamestown High this fall

Superintendent Dr. Keever announced that Williamsburg-James City County Schools (WJCC) will host an Army JROTC unit at Jamestown High School beginning this fall. "Over spring break, we received exciting news that WJCC will host an army JROTC unit this fall at Jamestown High School," Dr. Keever said, and he asked families to submit enrollment forms this week and noted the instructor-hiring process will begin in May.

Board members and staff described the program as a leadership and citizenship opportunity rather than a military enlistment pathway. Board member Dr. Cavazos said the selection reflects a competitive process — WJCC was chosen out of more than 50 school divisions — and emphasized that JROTC focuses on leadership, community service and teamwork. "There is no military obligation just because you signed up to participate in JROTC," a trustee added.

Why it matters: JROTC adds a new pathway for student leadership and character development across WJCC. The superintendent said the district worked with Army Cadet Command on implementation so students from all three high schools can enroll. The district has posted information and an enrollment form at wjccschools.org/jrotc.

Board members credited community partners and elected officials for support. Dr. Cavazos thanked local advocates and cited letters of recommendation from Representative Rob Wittman, Attorney General Jason Miyares and Delegate Chad Green as part of the application record.

Next steps: The district will proceed with instructor hiring in May and finalize enrollment logistics so the program can begin in the fall. The superintendent asked families to complete enrollment forms through the district website this week.
