Trustees recommend $12,000 grant to help open children’s bookstore in Stone Hill Center

At its June 17 meeting the Fox River Grove Board of Trustees recommended a $12,000 business capital assistance grant to help launch the Magical Forest children’s bookstore in Stone Hill Center.

Assistant Administrator Bechler introduced business owner Susan Kelly, who said her plan is to open the children‑focused bookstore in August, host events and sell books, toys and related items in a smaller, less overwhelming space than a big‑box retailer. Kelly said she has signed a six‑year lease for the Stone Hill location and hopes to expand later to include an adult book selection adjacent to the children’s store.

Kelly requested $15,000 in assistance. Trustees Steve Knar, David Joseph, Jennifer Curtiss and Village President Marc McLaughlin expressed support for a $12,000 grant under the village’s grant guidelines, while Trustees Devin Hester, Andrew Migdal and Kirsten Wall favored the full $15,000 request. Trustee Steve Knar moved and Trustee David Joseph seconded a motion asking staff to prepare an ordinance recommending a $12,000 grant; the motion carried with all voting in favor.

The recommendation directs staff to draft the formal ordinance for consideration at an upcoming meeting; the transcript does not record the ordinance language or funding source. If approved, the funds would be distributed under the village’s business capital assistance program and used to cover startup and operating costs for the new store.

Susan Kelly said she hopes the shop will nurture a love of reading among young children and will host events to draw families into the village.
