Resident urges city to press for sidewalks on Sierra College Boulevard after fatal crash

Kevin Shaw, a longtime Rocklin resident, told the council at its Feb. 10 meeting that a stretch of Sierra College Boulevard lacks sidewalks and poses a safety hazard for pedestrians.

"Right now, there are no sidewalks there," Shaw said. "It's a very small bike lane, very restricted to those that wanna walk between Rocklin Road and the Commons." He said recent and planned development on the east side will likely require sidewalks there, but the Sierra College campus side remains without sidewalks and presents a danger to people walking between nearby housing and retail.

Shaw noted the community has previously raised the issue and cited a past fatal hit-and-run, saying, "We've already had one death, unfortunately, and we've talked about it before in the past as well of Trevor, who was hit by a hit and run driver and killed in that area." He asked the city to press the college and developers to improve walking and bicycling conditions.

A council member told Shaw staff would follow up on his concerns and discuss planned improvements tied to current and proposed development. "We'll have those conversations," the council member said, adding that such solutions often take time but that staff would report back.

The resident's remarks came during the public comment period; council members did not take policy action at the meeting but directed staff to pursue follow-up conversations with the college and developers. No specific funding, timeline or construction plan was announced at the meeting.
