The School City of Hammond Board of Trustees voted April 21 to recognize the district's health services staff as a unit of the Hammond Teachers Federation.
Evangelina Garcia, an LPN who said she works in the nurse's office at Eger's, urged trustees to approve recognition so health services employees could —strengthen our collective voice and better position us to serve the entire community, students, and staff,— saying the department includes RNs, LPNs, EMTs and MAs and is led by Kelly Flynn, RN.
Trustee Cannellaro moved to approve recognition; the motion was seconded and the board approved the item. No detailed roll-call tally was read into the record beyond the procedure of —all in favor say aye— and the chair's statement that the —Ayes have it.—
Superintendent Salinas thanked the staff for their presentation and congratulated the group on gaining recognition. The recognition authorizes membership as a unit of the local teachers' federation; the board did not discuss contract terms, bargaining timelines or any implementation steps during the public meeting.
Next steps: trustees did not set an implementation timeline during the session; staff and trustees indicated additional details about next steps would be shared with the public when available.
