The resolution asks State Senator John Damoose and State Representative Betsy Coffia to sponsor legislation to allow the Grand Traverse Band to petition separately for a lower speed limit and requests an Attorney General opinion recognizing disparate treatment under current law.
During discussion Commissioner Bunek objected to using taxpayer funds for sidewalks that the Grand Traverse Band might fund itself and asked the board to consider sovereignty and financial responsibility; the board proceeded to adopt both the letter of support (vote 5–2 on the letter motion) and the speed-limit petition resolution (unanimous vote). The motion and resolution direct county staff to transmit the letter and resolution to the appropriate agencies and representatives.
