Smyth County to hold community meeting on reuse of Carnegie Building

County Administrator Shawn Utt told the Smyth County Board on Jan. 8 that the county had received numerous public suggestions for the Carnegie Building and that no formal plans had been established. Utt asked the Board to schedule a community meeting to gather public input on how the building should be used.
Royal Oak District Supervisor Courtney Widener requested placement on the Carnegie Building committee, noting the building lies in his district. Rye Valley District Supervisor Jason Parris urged that the county honor the building’s history and examine how other communities have adapted similar historic buildings.
Utt’s request for a public meeting and the supervisors’ comments indicate the county will move to a structured public-engagement phase before any formal decisions about the property are made.
