County staff described a program to contract with Hello Housing to deliver technical assistance and training to organizations interested in developing affordable housing on tax‑defaulted properties. Staff said Hello Housing is the only organization that has previously closed such a program successfully and will run classes starting in January and February, plus provide one‑on‑one assistance for organizations that wish to move projects forward.
The tax collector’s office is preparing a list of tax‑defaulted properties; staff and the tax collector will work in tandem to implement the program. Staff said that any project that comes to fruition with county funding will require board approval, and said they can report progress to the health committee or another board committee as requested.
Board members expressed interest in tracking outcomes and asked whether the county would use the health committee to receive reports about program results and approvals for individual projects.
