CHARLEVOIX, Mich. — The Charlevoix County Veterans Affairs Committee on March 30 voted to pay a veteran’s delinquent electricity bill and to tentatively approve paying rent once the veteran provides an eviction notice and the amount owed.
Polly Busman, county staff, presented the veteran’s emergency-assistance request and said the veteran supplied documentation only for the delinquent electric bill despite repeated requests for an eviction notice. Committee members discussed the need for veterans seeking assistance to provide complete documentation while also noting Veterans Service Organizations may sometimes assemble incomplete records for applicants.
William Cousineau moved to pay the electric bill immediately and to tentatively approve paying rent contingent on receiving the eviction notice and the amount owed. John Bush seconded the motion. A roll-call vote of the board members present carried the motion unanimously.
Members also discussed the committee’s budget line for emergency funds and directed Busman to research that line and report back at a future meeting. No dollar amounts for the veteran’s rent or utilities were specified in the minutes.
Chair Timothy Nemecek proposed cancelling the committee’s regularly scheduled April 2026 meeting; committee members unanimously supported cancelling that meeting.
