Dorchester County Council introduces FY27 budget, schedules public hearing

The Dorchester County Council on April 14 introduced the FY27 Budget & Appropriation Ordinance and authorized publication of a public hearing on the proposed fiscal plan.
Executive Operations Manager Irene Barnes presented the budget ordinance "for introduction," and on a motion by Councilman Ricky C. Travers, seconded by Vice President Mike Detmer, the council agreed to proceed with publishing a public hearing on the FY27 proposal. No members of the public offered comments at the meeting.
County Manager Jerry Jones told the council staff and auditors confirmed that state-related revenues and expenses still need to be verified and that the auditors confirmed the process of fully allocating state and federal grant funding. Jones said that full allocation of those grants has "significantly increased the overall budget." He also said there are no proposed changes to county tax rates or municipal tax differentials in the draft budget.
Council President George L. Pfeffer, Jr. thanked staff for their work balancing the budget and said the budget bill will be posted on the Dorchester County website.
Next steps include publishing the public-hearing notice and providing the public an opportunity to comment at the scheduled hearing; the council did not set a hearing date during the open session recorded in the minutes.
