The Bristol School Board approved a package of new-business items on April 20 that range from textbook adoptions and grants to facility planning and contract actions.
Dr. Tudor recommended adoption of wellness and high school health textbooks (Human Kinetics and LifeWell Foundations), and the board voted to accept the textbook recommendations. The board also approved submission of a preschool development grant application and authorized the LEAPS (Lottery for Education After School Programs) application to support after-school programming.
On facilities, the board approved Thompson Litton’s architectural and engineering proposal for a new multipurpose facility at Tennessee High School, describing an 8,000–10,000 square-foot design with an estimated construction cost of $2,250,000 and a proposed AE fee of $168,000 (about 7.5 percent of the estimate). The board also approved a $64,000 purchase order to supply and install an awning at Hainesville Elementary; the district said the awning will be paid for with PTA funds and capital project funds and installed over the summer to avoid disrupting school activities.
Separately, the board authorized district staff to notify Westfield Insurance, the contractor’s bond company, and to meet with Richardson Construction Group and the surety after repeated failure to complete the Tennessee High roof project on time; the board authorized Dr. Tudor to terminate the contract if necessary as a step required before making a bond claim.
All motions were moved, seconded and carried by the board during the meeting’s roll calls. Several items were described as routine or previously discussed; board members thanked staff for preparation and recommended continuing oversight as projects proceed.
