Storey County fire chief reports small brush fire, warns of heightened brush-season risk

Bob Reiser, Fire Chief for the fire protection district, told the Storey County Board of County Commissioners on April 21 that crews had quickly contained a small brush fire in the Glass Mountain area near the Bays Light Mine.
"This one appears to be, possibly someone shooting and then leaving the area," Reiser said, describing the likely cause. He said the fire burned about 0.3 acres, was entirely on Bureau of Land Management property and that mutual aid helped crews contain it.
Reiser warned the board the county is gearing up for brush season after an unusual winter and unseasonably warm temperatures. He said the district has completed seasonal hiring and will add seasonal staff this year, including three returning seasonal firefighters, which he said shows the strength of the training program.
No formal action or vote followed the fire chief's report. The board moved on to other committee and staff reports after hearing the update.
