Fair board urges county help for electrical repairs, roof work and reinstatement of operating funds

Leaders of the Madison County Agricultural Society told commissioners on April 21 that the county-owned fairgrounds faces several safety and maintenance needs and asked the board for assistance prioritizing safety-related electrical repairs and addressing a leaking roof at the Dell Selser Building.

The society's representative said the fairgrounds are the county's largest tourism hub during fair week and described past incidents to underline safety concerns, including a transformer that caught fire during a prior fair. The group presented an itemized list and said they already narrowed repair requests to the most urgent items.

The society asked the county to consider reinstating an operating stipend that had been suspended three years ago; the group said the county previously provided $50,000 a year and requested that any reinstated support be inflation adjusted. They also requested the board ask the Dallas Selser trust to consider matching funds to help cover a full roof replacement.

Estimates discussed at the meeting varied: staff and society members cited quotes that ranged from roughly $70,000 to more than $150,000 for roof work and identified a set of safety-driven electrical upgrades described in the meeting as approximately $34,000. Board members asked staff to obtain current bids and review procurement rules (county policy requiring additional quotes if the county pays vendors directly) before approving county-funded repairs.

Commissioners encouraged the group to provide updated financial statements and said staff would gather additional quotes and report back. The society also noted an emerging sponsorship opportunity to bring a larger event act to the county fair if the board chooses to support improvements.

"The Fairgrounds serves as the single greatest, hub of tourism in Madison County," the society representative said during the presentation.
