Council closes public hearing, approves placing 2025 delinquent assessments on 2026 summer tax bill

The Wayne City Council opened and closed a public hearing April 21 on proposed rules for delinquent 2025 special assessments. Renee, a city staff member, explained that 169 letters were mailed Jan. 27 and the published list consists of invoices billed in the 2025 calendar year that remained unpaid as of the April 20 deadline.
Renee told council that, if approved, those invoices would be transferred out of receivables on April 22 and placed as a line item on the 2026 summer tax bill, which will be mailed July 1. She reiterated the city’s tax-billing calendar: summer bills mailed July 1 and winter bills mailed Dec. 1; delinquent collections are sent to Wayne County on March 1 following close of the tax season.
No members of the public spoke at the hearing. A council member moved to close the hearing and, in a roll-call vote, the council approved closing the hearing and adopting the assessment rule so the unpaid invoices will be included on the 2026 summer tax bills.
What’s next: The assessment transfers will be processed on April 22 and the summer tax bill will be mailed July 1; taxpayers on the published list may contact the city for details.
