Board approves updated policies, asks staff to clarify enforcement for drug and alcohol provisions

The Lawrence County School Board voted to approve a package of policies (items 1 through 16) during its April 21 regular meeting. The policies were presented as updates from the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) reflecting recent legislative changes.
During discussion, the chair asked the director to provide a clear protocol for enforcing the revised drug and alcohol testing and separation provisions. The director said staff had consulted TSBA and would produce a proposed enforcement procedure for board review. "Our understanding of what we would need to do aligns with their advice as well," a staff member said.
The board approved the policies by voice vote. Board members also discussed the student wellness committee that the policy references and were told that board members may be invited to join the committee if they wish.
The board did not change the substance of the TSBA-provided language at the meeting; it approved the package and directed staff to return with implementation and enforcement detail where requested.
