Summary
Facilities staff told the Lawrence County School Board the district has begun work on purchased Etheridge daycare buildings and will open bids this week for gravel/earthwork on an 8-acre parking-lot parcel next to Summertown High; the board authorized executive-committee approval to expedite the contract once bids are evaluated.
District facilities staff updated the board on several summer capital projects and explained next steps for a newly acquired 8-acre parcel intended to serve Summertown High School.
Mister Tucker, facilities staff, said the smaller of two purchased Etheridge daycare buildings is nearly finished and the larger building requires ceiling, lighting and plumbing wrap-up; internet, fire alarm and access-control installations and some exterior fence and sidewalk work are underway. "The small building is completely finished, with exception of when we get the Internet and the fire alarm," he said, and staff are pushing to complete maintenance work by May so the school can use the spaces over the summer.
On the Summertown High parking-lot parcel, Tucker said the initial bid package (grading, drainage, gravel, sidewalks and underground electrical for future lighting) will open Thursday; paving will be a later phase. He described the site as roughly 8 acres and said a fully paved design would yield "over 400 parking spots" in the conceptual plan. The district has completed demolition of some on-site structures and cleared trees in preparation for the bid.
The board voted to authorize the chair and executive committee to review the bids and, barring a "show-stopping negative," proceed with executive-committee approval to keep the schedule on track for next football season. Board members said the expedited process is needed to compress multiple projects into the summer window.
No final construction contract was awarded at the meeting; staff will report bids to the board and seek executive-committee action per the authorization the board granted.
