Humboldt County supervisors spent an extended portion of the meeting debating how to support a regional trail project and a grant application due March 20.
Supporters said the grant could bring substantial construction activity to the county; one supervisor said the county’s $150,000 (over three years) local commitment would leverage nearly $2.5 million in construction if the grant is awarded. "If we get the grant, it's gonna bring our share of... $2.5 million worth of construction into the county," a supervisor said.
The board discussed funding options including revenue sharing, reallocation of internal discretionary budgets (trail signage, park shelter repairs), and using federal grant reimbursement (NACA) funds. Staff and project advocates emphasized that securing easements is the crucial first step for grant competitiveness and that easements often take time before funds change hands.
The meeting included a motion to rescind the previously discussed $50,000-per-year pledge; there was confusion about motions and seconds, and one motion to rescind did not receive a second and therefore died. The board ultimately voted to remove the $50,000 annual obligation while retaining a resolution in support of the grant application and directed staff to prepare a revenue-sharing resolution and proceed with easement work and grant submission.
