Beaufort County executive committee forwards slate of board nominations to county council after executive session
Summary
After interviews in an executive session under S.C. Code §30-4-70(a)(1), the Beaufort County Executive Committee on April 13 approved a slate of nominees and reappointments and voted to send the full list to the county council for individual votes.
The Beaufort County Executive Committee voted April 13 to forward a slate of board and commission nominees to the full county council for individual consideration after holding interviews in executive session.
The committee’s chair announced the recommendations immediately after the committee returned from executive session, citing South Carolina Code section 30-4-70(a)(1) as the legal basis for closing that portion of the meeting. “We are recommending Nick Borjone,” the chair said when listing nominees recommended to the county council.
Committee member Cunningham moved that the committee consider the reappointments as a single packet to forward to the council, with each name to be read and voted on individually at the council meeting. “I move that the executive committee consider all these reappointments as one item and forward them to full council for individual consideration and votes at that time,” Cunningham said. The motion carried after a second and a voice/hand vote.
The committee listed nominations and reappointments to several boards and commissions. The chair announced a recommendation of Nick Borjone to the State ATAX committee; the Bluffton Township Fire District Board nominee Rick Scribe; and, for the Design Review Board, nominees Selena Morello, Carolyn Atkins and Elizabeth Epstein. The committee also recommended Sarah Miller for the Keith-Beaufort County Beautiful board (District 4); Patty Brown for the Library Board (District 1); Philip Mansker as an at-large member of the Parks and Recreation Board; Adam Saslow and Dee Simpson for the Stormwater Management Utility Board (Districts 4 and 8); and Charles Newton for the Planning Commission.
The chair said the committee’s approvals were recommendations to county council rather than final appointments. "And for the public, all of the names will be read individually. A county council will vote on each one," the chair said. The committee recorded the motions, moved into executive session for interviews, and after returning approved the slate and directed staff to forward the full list of reappointments to the county council for final action.
No members of the public had registered to speak during the public comment period. The committee concluded its business and adjourned shortly after the vote.
