Tumwater committee shifts regular meeting to third Wednesday at 11 a.m.

On March 11, 2026, the City of Tumwater General Government Committee voted to set its regular meeting time for the third Wednesday of each month at 11 a.m., a change intended to reduce conflicts with ORCA meetings and avoid cancelling the April meeting during spring break.
Administrator Simmons told the committee staff prefers an 11:00 a.m. start and that moving to the third Wednesday would allow the city to keep an April meeting that would otherwise have been canceled for spring break. "The thought process I've heard is to move it to the third Wednesday," Simmons said, noting staff could support that schedule and that a special meeting could be scheduled in April if needed.
Council Member Swarthout moved the scheduling change; Council Member Brandon Wheaton seconded and the committee approved the motion by voice vote. Karen (staff) advised the committee that under the rules the regular meeting schedule should be set on an annual basis and that while special meetings can be called as needed, the regular schedule should not be changed repeatedly.
Committee members asked staff to coordinate the change and to notify members (including Council Member Cathy, who had a standing conflict) about the new schedule. The committee did not discuss additional substantive policy changes; the item was an administrative scheduling decision.
