Scranton SD board approves submission of public school facility grant requests

The Scranton School District Board of School Directors voted unanimously to authorize submission of grant requests to the Public School Facility Improvement Program, approving three projects that the district says would upgrade plumbing and electrical switchgear, replace roofs and replace HVAC equipment.

Budget and finance director Strzelecki presented the projects and cost estimates. He said the first project covers West Grant and Scranton High School plumbing and switchgear with a combined construction cost of $8,171,890. The second is a districtwide roof replacement package for Scranton High School, Northeast Intermediate and Plaza with a construction cost of $4,520,692 and a grant request of $3,390,519. The third project is an HVAC replacement at McNichols Educational Plaza with a construction cost of $641,355 and a grant request of $481,016.

The board authorized the attached public school improvement grant resolutions and directed Superintendent Keating to prepare and submit the required funding commitment letters following the grant submission guidelines. A motion to approve the submissions was made, seconded and passed on a roll-call vote of seven in favor and none opposed.

The approvals allow district staff to finalize and file grant applications; the board did not set a subsequent vote or funding appropriation in this meeting record. If the grants are awarded, the board will need to consider any required match or contracting approvals in future meetings.
