The Hawaiian Gardens City Council voted April 22 to donate $5,000 to Feddy Academy to provide uniform shirts for about 300 students.
City staff said the uniform program has produced a positive shift in campus culture and that more than 90% of students at Feddy are city residents, many from low-income households. Staff recommended the donation to ensure every student has access to at least one school shirt; principal Denise Macias said the shirts are distributed to current seventh graders moving into eighth grade as well as students who need replacements this year and next.
Council members asked whether the shirts would cover the current year and the upcoming year; staff and the principal said shirts would be provided now and for the incoming cohort as needed. A council member asked whether there is a return/donation program for gently used shirts; staff said there is a program to accept donations for reuse.
A motion to approve the donation was made, seconded and carried on a unanimous roll-call vote.
Principal Macias thanked the council for the donation and said it helps support school culture and student focus.
The city did not specify procurement or vendor details at the meeting; council members directed staff to work with the school to ensure timely distribution.
