VEA president tells Bettendorf board tentative agreement reached but teachers report disrespect, retaliation and resignations

At the Bettendorf board meeting on April 23, VEA president Emily (speaker 3) reported that bargaining reached a tentative agreement earlier than in past years but cautioned that the formal IBPS process experienced challenges and that many teachers feel undervalued.
Emily said the union and district have had "some challenges with the process this year" but also noted collaborative successes. She reported widespread concerns from staff: "I have witnessed it. I have experienced what has not been consistent. I have been disrespected in professional situations... We are in almost a 100 people that have reported that to me." She warned that experienced teachers are leaving and urged the board to ask whether the district is truly listening to its teachers.
Emily said the union will pursue follow-up IBPS meetings to reflect on the year, identify improvements and set clear goals and timelines. She also announced that the membership unanimously ratified the agreement with 100% participation and invited the community to a May 1 stand-up for public education.
Separately, a public commenter raised concerns about classroom-section reductions at Hoover, how turning students away affects competitiveness under Iowa's school-choice/ESA environment, and urged the board to consider thresholds for reopening sections. Parent Matt Kelly requested the board consider a resolution urging the governor and legislature to fully fund public schools and regulate ESA impacts.
