Wood County public health director announces retirement; three board seats could change

Wood County Board Chair Lance Plimel said Public Health Director Sue Smith has set a retirement date of March 18 next year and that the county will plan a smooth internal transition.
Plimel described Smith as one of the state’s most respected public health officers and said the county aims to groom internal candidates where possible to maintain continuity. “Sue gave us a year, and said It's very generous,” he said, noting the long notice is intended to allow for succession planning.
Plimel also discussed upcoming county board turnover: the board has 19 members, and he said three seats could change in the next election cycle; one candidate, John Hockamp, declared and later withdrew. He said he does not foresee wholesale changes to the board’s overall direction.
